New Showroom at SGM House: Wide range of domestic products now available

SGM has expanded its product range to meet the requirements of domestic consumers, gardeners and contractors. SGM Contracts LLP is reputable for its service delivery in the commercial groundcare industry and has a number of contracts across the UK with local authorities and golf courses, such as Gleneagles. SGM’s success in this sector is grounded on its partnering approach to groundcare performance, whereby the company works in partnership with organisations to help them improve the services they offer. Central to this approach is the notion of adding value to the customer experience. SGM is now seeking to extend the concept of added value onto its new product and service offerings; this is achieved by applying the experience and knowledge gained from working in partnership with local authorities and golf courses to the supply of machinery to the domestic market. “We have been providing commercial customers with quality products and services for many years now, and are delighted to be able to extend our offering to a wider customer base” says Steven McInroy, Managing Director, SGM Contracts LLP. SGM has selected a range of quality pedestrian and ride-on lawn mowers, hedge-cutters, strimmers and pressure washers. These products are designed with home-owners in mind but are also popular amongst private contractors, and owners and managers of estates, caravan parks, equine centres and sports clubs. Additionally, SGM is now supplying a full range of arboriculture accessories and associated equipment as well as a large volume of consumable spare parts. As a well-established groundcare company, SGM is able to negotiate with all the main manufacturers enabling the supply of quality brands including Westwood, Bosch, Hayter, Stihl, Ryobi, Alpina and Suffolk Punch. SGM’s experienced staff are able to offer advice on the best machinery for all types of jobs, as well as providing first class after sales and service support for all the leading brands. SGM is able to provide flexible service packages tailored to meet individual needs. This new range of products is being showcased in SGM’s main showroom at the company headquarters in Belleknowes Industrial Estate, Inverkeithing, which is now open to the public from 8am-5pm Monday to Friday and 8am-12noon Saturdays. Stockport MBC extends its contract with SGM

SGM is delighted to announce an extension of its contract with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. SGM have been working in partnership with the council and it’s wholly owned subsidiary Solutions SK since 2005 to manage the council’s fleet of grass cutting machinery. At the start of the contract approximately 25% of kit was still Council owned and was to be maintained by SGM. This equipment would be replaced during the course of the contract as and when both parties agreed that it was uneconomical to repair, but whilst still on the fleet needed to have accurate service records and be fit for purpose. In early 2006, the council set up a wholly owned subsidiary named Solutions SK, which was formed to provide a diverse range of services to the council, residents of the borough, other public sector organisations and private businesses. “Our mission is to deliver competitive, caring and responsive services. We are a reliable, trustworthy company that delivers quality, value for money services tailored to suit individual customer requirements” says Nic Cox, General Manager, Solutions SK. With the council work now split between Solutions SK and Stockport MBC, who retained the parks and fine turf areas, this change meant that the machinery requirements had to change, and SGM had to demonstrate its flexibility with the supply of machines now to both organisations. Clearly the management of both organisations had a number of issues to deal with internally, which meant that having a flexible partner such as SGM was vitally important during this time. “With a number of changes impacting the contract over the last few years, SGM have at all times reacted positively and effectively in assisting both ourselves and the council in facilitating any required changes. Having fixed costs with no hidden extras is important for us, particularly as we look to extend our workload with the addition of new contracts” says Nic. At the start of 2009 machines owned by the council had reduced down to a level of under 5% of the total fleet, with SGM now employing 3 engineers and its Business Manager Eirian Roberts now working from the same depot within Stockport. Monthly meetings are held with the Council to discuss current issues, new developments and any new products SGM feel can bring additional value to the contract. As the end of the five year contract came into sight this year SGM recognised that current issues surrounding local government, and particularly the forthcoming cuts in public spending would play an essential part in Stockport MBC’s decision to extend the contract. SGM therefore guaranteed further flexibility in all aspects of the contract as well as offering efficiency savings in areas such as fleet numbers and utilisation, response times and machine downtime and operator training and staff development. These proposals were in line with Stockport MBC’s and Solutions SK’s visions for the future, resulting in a five year extension to the current contract. Despite the current economic pressures on local government, SGM fully believes that its Partnering Approach to Groundcare Performance provides councils with innovative solutions for creating better services at less cost. Budget 2010: Opportunities for Innovation

Yesterday, Chancellor George Osborne unveiled his ‘tough but fair’ Budget for 2010. As predicted, the new Coalition Government has made significant decisions towards deficit reduction aims and restoring the UK’s competiveness. These include an increase in the VAT on goods and services as of January 2011, freezes in benefits, and a rise in capital gains tax for higher-rate tax payers. As expected, cuts in public spending were announced as well as pay freezes for public sector workers. Aside from the NHS and international aid, all government department budgets will be slashed by an average of 25% by 2014/15, which equates to reductions in spending of £30 billion a year. Public services now have an uneasy wait for the spending review on 20 October, which will dictate the precise cuts in each area. Local government faces added tension given that these budgetary pressures are in addition to several years of spending cuts that have already taken place. In order to avoid mass redundancies, local government needs to implement new strategies for all public services. For Parks, Open Spaces and Horticultural services additional budgetary pressures are coupled with new legislative requirements and higher public expectations. To address the new challenges acquired from yesterday’s Budget experts are suggesting that local governments review how and why they do things. Lord Bichard, Director of the Insitute for Government said, “Those who run public services can do one of two things: carry on trying to run services as they do now and wait for the fallout from the budget, knowing that current flaws in their services will only become more obvious and more entrenched. Alternatively, ask serious questions about how a service is functioning and radically rethink its design. It will take imagination and innovation and it won’t be pain-free, but doing it could help get even better services than before and cut waste.” Councils now have the opportunity to offer better services at less cost. SGM can help to make this transition to an era of “citizen creativity” less painful by offering product funding, parts and service support and a range of packages tailored to meet councils’ individual requirements. SGM operate a ‘Partnering Approach’ to groundcare performance, which is designed to provide innovative solutions for councils and businesses through times of economic pressure and beyond. SGM has proved on a number of contracts with customers such as Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, Northampton Borough Council and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council that efficiency and cost savings can be made of up to 35% whilst improving service levels in conjunction with the council. At Stockport, SGM is about to enter into a 5 year extension period and are now in the process of implementing a joint “Partnering Plan” which encompasses all areas of the contract but with the aim of cost and efficiency improvements. As part of the contract SGM provides a rental for the workshop used which provides the council with an additional revenue stream against their already in place overhead structure. SGM currently operates from 9 depots nationwide and offers its customers a true “Partnering Approach” to groundcare fleet management. The SGM product line has been extended this month to incorporate a range of Bandit chippers grinders, and shredders including biomass wood chippers ranging from six inch to twenty inch; stump grinders ranging from pedestrian to fully remote control all-terrain machines; and the Mini Beast shredder. In addition to supplying a vast range of commercial groundcare machinery, SGM are forestry and arboricultural specialists. The introduction of the Bandit product range will enable SGM to meet a broader range of customer needs within the industry. The new product offerings come as a result of a recent dealership with Global Recycling Solutions Ltd. Commenting on the deal, Paul Caldwell (European Sales Director for Global Recycling Solutions Ltd) said, “For many years we have created a presence with the Bandit range of equipment, but I believe the next step is to take us into the 21st Century. We will be developing this with SGM, who has an excellent reputation and more importantly the resources to back-up and develop the range of Biomass and Arboricultural equipment in Scotland. I am very excited with this next chapter and the opportunities it presents and wish them well for the future.” The dealership proved to be a good move from the offset with the first sale of the new machinery being made by SGM to Land Engineering within one day of the partnership being confirmed. The New Low-cost Metrac G3 Banking Mower

SGM are delighted to introduce Reform’s new low-cost and lightweight model with 44HP and 26" wheels, which is the economical solution for working on slopes of up to 45°.

With tighter regulations surrounding the health and safety working on bankings, the Reform range of mowers can help overcome these issues by having a greater working incline than standard mowers.

The G3 comes standard with front linkage which enables the user to fit either a heavy duty flail mower or a rotary mower – the choice is yours.

Although designed with bankings and slopes in mind, these tractors are capable of working all year round, working on anything from pitch maintenance, golf courses, parks and snow clearing. Due to the light weight of this machine it is easy to transport from site to site without the worry of additional haulage transport costs.

The Metrac G3 is the ideal machine for local authorities and contractors who are looking for a low budget banking mower and with prices starting from only £29900, the G3 is the economical solution for working on slopes.

SGM is currently the Reform dealer for Scotland and is delighted at being able to offer its customers machines that offer a safe working environment for the operators whilst maintaining consistent and flexible options.

SGM Post Election Thoughts

With the appointment last night of David Cameron as Prime Minister of a Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government, it is clear that the financial pressures facing councils and public spending generally will increase dramatically with some political commentators stating efficiency savings as much as £6 billion in this current financial year, as part of an accelerated deficit reduction plan.

Vince Cable of the Liberal Democrats yesterday ditched his strong objection to cuts in public spending this year in a boost to Tory economic policy. The Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman who had previously warned of the risks of early cuts, said that the sovereign debt crisis in Greece which has threatened to cause havoc in other European countries had reinforced the need for tough fiscal discipline. During the election campaign, Mr Cable stressed that reducing public spending too quickly could plunge Britain into a “double-dip” recession. He now believes stimulus in the British economy can be maintained by other means, such as forcing banks to lend to small and medium sized firms and a monetary policy to support recovery.

On cuts this year, he said “We are not dogmatically objecting to that. We realise that quite radical action may be required on the economic front.” However, he added “Action will have to be taken to prevent the economy sliding back into a slump.” Economists have warned that some government departments face cuts of up to 25 percent as Britian seeks to tackle its fiscal deficit of £167 billion.

With the impending challenges being faced on public spending, SGM continues to offer its public sector customers with a range of products and services designed to assist councils in their efforts to improve/increase value for money within the public sector. SGM who have a proven track record of product funding, parts and service support, are currently offering councils a range of packages tailored to meet individual requirements with efficiency and cost savings at their core.

SGM has proved on a number of contracts with customers such as Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, Northampton Borough Council and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council that efficiency and cost savings can be made of up to 35% whilst improving services levels in conjunction with the council. At Stockport, SGM is about to enter into a 5 year extension period and are now in the process of implementing a joint “Partnering Plan” which encompasses all areas of the contract but with the aim of cost and efficiency improvements. SGM Pre-Election Thoughts

With the General Election on the 6th of May, SGM is taking a current view on the current financial pressures facing councils, and how some of the current initiatives and efficiency savings it is able to offer can assist councils in hitting their public sector efficiency savings targets, and how the current political debates are likely to shape the future of front line services.

During the final leaders debate held at the Institute for Fiscal Studies in Birmingham, one economic forecaster released an analysis which said none of the political parties had come “anywhere close” to disclosing there plans for dramatic public sector cutbacks. The institute said there was a black-hole of up to £52 billion in the parties economic plans.

With the focus of the recent debate around the economy, each leader set about trying to undermine each others policies, with Mr Cameron and Mr Brown in particular at loggerheads. During the debate Mr Brown refused to concede that further public sector cuts would be necessary under his “deficit reduction plan”. However, Mr Cameron said “There are going to have to be cuts, and we need to be frank about this. I will do everything I can to protect front line services.

The Liberal Democrat leader also conceded that further cutbacks were in the pipeline. He said there was a “huge black hole” in the public finances. He said we have got to “get the politicians working together on this ….. politicians putting the country before themselves”.

But how do these imminent changes to our government, impact on our front line services and in particular our parks. Parks, Open Spaces and Horticultural Services are one of the most important services to the public and are highly valuable in their contribution to health and leisure, the quality of the environment, the economy, social inclusion and combating climate change. However, as part of the current political debate, parks services are facing budgetary pressures coupled with new legislative requirements and higher public expectations. To address these challenges, councils are trying to secure additional funding, managing efficiency reviews, maximising income opportunities, raising the profile of parks, working in partnership with the community and businesses, developing their skills and effectively managing green spaces.

To help to partly address some of these challenges, and as part of councils efforts to improve/increase value for money within the public sector, SGM who have a proven track record of product funding, parts and service support, are currently offering councils a range of packages tailored to meet individual requirements.

Fresh Approach to Winter Servicing

Our winter servicing offers at SGM have given our Inverkeithing depot a great start to 2010.

Our fresh approach to helping customers find a solution to their problems has helped us to attract new customers to SGM. One of these new customer includes Aberfoyle Golf Course, who have just finished winter servicing their green keeping machinery.

Sitting at the foot of the Menteith Hills, on the southern border of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, Aberfoyle is one of Scotland’s most scenic and interesting golf courses (www.aberfoylegolf.com)

Kerr Hutchison, our Inverkeithing Service Manager met with Alan Moore, who has been Head Greenkeeper at Aberfoyle Golf Course for 4 years. Alan has worked at Aberfoyle for the past 14 years, alongside colleague Dougie Steel. They were looking for some of their golf course equipment to be fully serviced by SGM and also wanted to make savings at the golf course by servicing some of the more basic machinery himself.

Kerr was able to support Alan by providing parts from our own parts department and giving one to one tuition in the servicing of his own machines. This allowed Alan to allocate the savings he had made to other areas in maintaining the Golf Club and also to put some of those savings into hiring a verti drain from our hire department, as part of his spring maintenance to his greens.

For further information on prices for in season service work or regrinds at any of our depots you can contact us on 0800 432 0440 or email enquiries@sgm-uk.com

Strictly Come Dancing Meets APSE

Council’s quick step to the top with Flavia!

Some early festive cheer was brought to local authorities with Strictly Come Dancing star, Flavia Cacace, presenting winners of the APSE performance networks awards 2009. Hosted in Blackpool the awards recognised the best and most improved performers in local government front line services.

SGM sponsored the award for 'Parks, open spaces and horticultural services' and our congratulations go to the winners of the award, Copeland Borough Council (pictured David McInroy with the winners and Flavia).

Speaking to the finalists at the awards Ms Cacace said ‘As a professional dancer I know that in order to achieve and sustain the highest levels of performance you need to have dedication and commitment and a willingness to constantly learn and improve. These are all qualities that you need in competition and are qualities that all of you here tonight bring to your own working lives to make sure that the public receive the best possible public services’

Councillor Shaun Gallagher, APSE’s national chair said ‘Winning a performance networks award is a real credit to the work of those managers and front line staff who are often the unsung heroes behind services such as school meals, bins and parks but they are often overlooked. I congratulate everyone of these winning councils’

The awards are for ‘best performer’ and ‘most improved performer’ which recognise and encourage continuous improvement in cost, quality and customer satisfaction across eleven different front line services provided by local councils.

Mark Bramah, APSE assistant chief executive, said ‘The public sector faces an austere future so getting best value for the public pound means constantly getting the best performance from our front line public services. What these awards show is that in front line local council services there is a genuine commitment to providing high quality at the best price. The awards are strictly about performance and we have judged these councils to be amongst the very best in front line service delivery’
